“The difference between PR and social media is PR is about
positioning, and social media is about becoming, being, and improving.” –Chris
Brogan
We live in a social media world. Social media is changing
everything about the business world, especially the world of PR. The media are
no longer the only source of relevant information. This is why we must embrace social media, learn how to utilize the tools social media provides and continue improving in order to be successful.
“People—your customers, your employees, your
stakeholders—are now the media, the editors, and the reviewers. They are in
control and they’re going to let you know what they think by voicing their
opinions and changing their behavior.”
The social media revolution requires us to think in
innovative ways and redefine marketing success. The three main areas social
media is requiring us to shift our thought processes in are:
- Timeliness has been redefined.
- The role of marketing and communications has been redefined.
- Most definitions of success are irrelevant.
Reputations can be made or destroyed very quickly in today’s
social media environment. This requires today’s PR professional to keep these
three components of social media shifts in mind in order to be successful. Brand monitoring is more important than ever and you will not succeed unless you keep this fact in mind when dealing with each social media platform.
